Clonazepam is a generic name for benzodiazepines that is approved to be given to the people who have problems with nervousness, anxiety, tension and also some of the seizures. It is also used for some types of epilepsy, social phobia, post-traumatic stress, mania and also used in relieving the panic disorder. It works by slowing down the central of the nervous system. It will block the involvement of chemical transmission within the nerve impulse inside of human brain. This medicine is also known as Klonopin and is classified as the sedative-hypnotic kind of drug.
Clonazepam is known to be more sedating compare to other benzodiazepine drug that used to treat the panic disorder like alprazolam. More sedating does not mean that it is better choice. Clonazepam has the possibility to trigger an episode of depression to its patients. This possibility applied for the patients who have the history of a depression. clonazepam treatment will be able to reduce the depression had by the patients who suffer the social phobia. However, the use of this drug for treating the social phobia is considered being off-label or in other words illegal although that the illegalness is not approved by FDA specifically.clonazepam 0.5 mg is known as the recommended dosage to be taken by the patients. 0.5 mg here will be taken by taking clonazepam 0.25 mg twice in a day. This dosage can be increased from twice a day into three times a day with increment about 0.125 mg – 0.25 mg a three times in a day. The dosage of clonazepam recommended is not more than 1.5 mg although that in some cases, the dosage that may be taken can be up to 10 mg. The people who take clonazepam in the maximum recommended dosage or even more are the people who have the panic disorder.
The 10 mg dosage of clonazepam is taken by the people who diagnosed to be mania, while the dosage of clonazepam that is used to treat the post-traumatic stress disorder is ranging around 0.25 mg to 3 mg. But, as mentioned before clonazepam usage in treating the post-traumatic stress disorder isn’t approved yet by FDA. The other dosage found in use of clonazepam is around 1.0 mg to 2.5 mg for the people who will be treated because of social phobia. It is better to take the medicine as the prescript one because in that way, the dosage will be put under control.
In taking clonazepam, it is important to remember not to take it along with the other drugs those will depress the nervous system central. The drugs those cannot be taken along with clonazepam is including the opiates kind of drugs like codeine or hydromorphone and also the drugs contained antihistamines that commonly found in a lot of drugs for allergy and cold. Alcohol is a no as well when taking clonazepam. The other drugs mentioned before and also the alcohol is not allowed because they will increase the sedative effect in clonazepam.
There are also some drugs those will decrease and increase effectiveness of clonazepam. Antabuse or disulfiram that is used by the alcohol dependence patients will increase effectiveness of clonazepam while the drugs like carbamazepine, Phenobarbital and rifampin will reduce the effectiveness of clonazepam. Some people with certain conditions are not allowed to take clonazepam as well. Pregnant women are not allowed to take clonazepam because it will be bad for the baby. People with allergy reaction toward clonazepam or other benzodiazepine drugs, people with severe liver disease are also not allowed.
The patients of narrow-angle glaucoma are also not allowed to take clonazepam while the patients of kidney disease will be able to take clonazepam but the dosage will need to be reduced. Clonazepam is known as the depressant of the nervous system, please be careful in taking the drug. Remember the drugs or substances those are not allowed to be taken along with it and please remember to avoid the drug under the certain condition even if someone has been used to using it. It is important to keep track on the things shouldn’t be taken along with it to avoid bad effects.
The people who take clonazepam for the very first time will feel mentally sluggish or feel drowsy. Therefore these people are not allowed to drive cars or being in the hazardous condition like when operating the dangerous machines. Patients who have depression will need to be watched as they take clonazepam or else, they might suicide. Depression, dizziness, fatigue, impaired coordination and sedation are main effects of clonazepam while some people also feel the decrease in sex drive, anorexia, blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth or even irregular menstruation cycle.
